Blank Slate

Buy.Sell.Create.Dwell

Sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to fill a big blank wall. Maybe you are in the process of getting your house ready to sell, or you are already in your dream home, and want to make your space more personalized. Big pieces of art can be expensive, and unless it is a meaningful piece, can look like a space filler. One of our team members found an inexpensive and personal way to decorate the wall in her kitchen. It added depth and charm, completely transforming the feel of the room, all for under $100.

What She Used

  • Old picture frames – Our team member found frames at the local thrift store. Each frame was less than $2, they do not need to match.
  • Chalk paint – This is why the frames do not need to match. Our team member used Annie Sloan chalk paint, but any chalk paint will do. Check out our Pinterest – BuySellCreateDwell/Kurtz&Co. to see recipes on how to make your own chalk paint!
  • Pictures – Family photos, friends, etc.
  • Fabric – Small scraps that are colorful.
  • Statement pieces – one or two statement pieces that catch your eye and break-up the picture frames. Mirrors are always good because they make a room feel bigger.

Step-By-Step

  1. Figure out how much space you want to fill, and map out several different layouts on a piece of paper. Our team member used a more organic approach verses a symmetrical layout. This way you can play around with your vision without poking tons of holes in your walls!
  2. Paint your frames.
  3. Fill the frames with photos or cover cardboard with fabric.
  4. Follow your layout. It is easiest to start on either end with anchor pieces and then work your way towards the middle. That way you know that your work is centered on the wall at the very beginning.

Have fun creating!

Sincerely,
Kurtz & Co.
